August Half-Time Update Preseason is Almost Over

Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by once again.  Instead of my normal Thursday credit card posts I just wanted to give you guys a quick update.  August is already halfway over and I still have so much I need to take care of.

Between the family and blogging my days are really merging together.  I still haven’t gotten around to guest posting on another site yet but I hopefully will get to those in the second half of the month.

Family Life and the kids

The family has been keeping me pretty busy over the past couple of weeks.  My younger brother started football camp for high school so now I am forced to get up 30 minutes earlier to make sure I get up and fix him breakfast while still having time to get Twinkie ready for school.  He has two a days for practice until tomorrow and then school starts on Monday.

As for my little Twinkie I spend about 30-40 minutes with her every morning feeding and getting her ready for daycare.  She is something, always smiling and for some reason she just hates me holding her when she is tired.

When she is ready to go to sleep I just put her down and out she goes.  Little mama is certainly growing up fast and each passing day I am reminded how time flies more the reason to get this online income going so I can spend even more time with her.

The wifey as been deadd tired the past few days as Twinkie decided she didn’t want to sleep through the night.  Right now I am sleeping in her room with her so that mommy can sleep through the whole night.  She is still adjusting to going back to work at this point and really misses time with our daughter.  Since I work from home I try to make sure everything is done by the time her and Twinkie arrive home so all she has to do is eat and play with the little one.

Blogging, Networking and More Blogging

Over the past two weeks I have been hard at work working on all my sites.  I just started focusing more on my Thomas S. Moore site and as well as my four other sites.  Thomas S. Moore is where I put up a few post talking about tips for bloggers and digital marketing.

I usually get a few email from bloggers asking about traffic, seo and other things so feel free to email me and I will do my best to answer your question.  If you have something in particular you would like me to do a post on just leave it in the comments on the site or email me.

The two travel sites I am working are in the early stages of development and I am getting all the content ready to push them forward by the beginning of September.  I plan to have a lot going on with them and as soon as I have them ready I will do a pre-launch.  Right now the plan is to have a post Monday through Friday with weekends off so I need about 60 posts for each site.

Networking has been going wonderful and I have met a lot of great people.  From personal finance bloggers to marketers, business owners to investors I try to meet and help as many people as I can.  You never know what might come out of an actual email or tweet.  Being helpful and genuine are what works best and I really enjoy learning and soaking up knowledge.

Post Schedule, Guest Posts, and Writers

A lot has been going on behind the scenes here at Your Daily Finance.  I am in the process of adding two writers to help me produce content.  I wont say that it will be a lot more content just it will make it easier for me to do what I do best as well as giving a different perspective on different aspects of personal finance.  I am thinking about a new schedule for the site with Monday, Wednesday and Friday posts but I am not quite sure yet.

For the future of YDF there will be guest posts from industry experts much like how Brandon Turner did the post a few weeks ago about real estate investing which you can read here.  I have a few other guest posts lined up and I think going forward they will be a great asset to readers and building up this site into an authority site.

Advertising, Freelancing and Income

I am on the wall as to what I want to do with monetization of this site.  I know a lot of people sell sponsored posts, do adsense, affiliate products, or use their site to help them freelance and start a business.  For me its just choosing what I that is sustainable long term.  As for my income from online to this point for the month I have made a total of $80 to date from my online efforts more on this at the end of the month.

Thats it for now.  Gotta get back to grinding and figure out some aspects of all my sites and creating a strategy that will allow me to cut down the hours I am working and scale the business so that I have even more time to spend with the family.

How is your August going?  Anything new?  What are you looking to accomplish before the end of the month?  Any new projects or ideas for making income or being better with your finances?

  1. Great update post! Seriously love the detailed update posts, makes me wish I did them more often. Sounds like you are doing really well on developing your websites! I would love to add a second writer or be able to have Cat write twice a week, still debating back and forth about that. I plan on finally getting to the web redesign contract this weekend so that the redesign can get going (I’m the bottleneck right now!). I like your idea of having sixty posts ready to go for your travel sites before launching. I really should consider doing something similar when I get around to starting a second site. I’m looking forward to seeing them when they are live!

    • Thanks DC and you are welcome! These are the easiest post because they are just about life as it happens so not a lot to them. Having the posts ready and scheduled will save a lot of time and headache. I will make sure to let you know when the travel sites are up and ready. If hiring another writer is going to save you time I say go for it. I am working this hard with a end goal in mind. Spending more time with the family. Thanks for the comment!

  2. As far as monetization of my site goes I am still looking for the right way to do it. I don’t want to put people off so it’s something I really want to think about. I am also getting a little redesign done.

You are doing awesome. Good luck with getting all of the sites set up!

    • Hey Alexa your site is going great as well and really enjoy your post about Freelancing. Monetization is a tricky one but I think we all are trying to figure a way to make money for ourselves and our blogs can either make money for us or help us find other avenues to earn income. Thanks you for stopping by and commenting!

  3. Wow looks like you have a lot going on! I’m in the process of starting a travel website as well but I’m getting tired from having so much on my plate. I need to just make the leap to self-employment now!

    • Michelle you need to just quit already! I think you have about twice as much as I have going on and you are starting a new site. Go ahead in put in that two weeks notice. Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Always good to hear what you’re up to Thomas! Wait you have to wake up even earlier?? So you’re up at 4:30? That is insane! Can’t wait to hear more about your travel sites. As for my August…it has been hectic…a lot of change going on. I think I will do an update. I’ve only posted twice a week and couldn’t even do that this week, so much going on, but I need to get back on track.

    • I know Andrew but this is the last week waking up as 4:30am. Monday the kids go back to school and I can sleep in until 5am again…lol. The travel site are coming along and I really niched down this time. I would love to hear whats going on with you especially with the arrival of the baby. I am sure our lives are pretty much the same on the baby front and little sleep.

  5. I need to get ready for my Fantasy Football draft!

Family life with the kids takes up my spare time.

Good luck on the sleeping through the night, we had a rough go with Thing 2 around 3-4 months ago, but luckily it’s smooth sailing now, other than an occasional teething related incident.

    • NoWaste you need to get on that FF draft! I told my wifey I work in my spare time and she just gives me the evil eye. Twinkie is a good girl and she is just off schedule right now. Usually she is out by 8:30-9pm and doesnt wake up til 5:30. Lately she’s had a bad cough and she wakes up. Plus we think she’s teething as well. Thanks for stopping through and sharing.

  6. Thanks for the update, Thomas. I wish you the best on your travel sites as well.

All the best to your family, especially your brother going through two a days in the August heat.

    • Brian anytime! I enjoy the updates and it keeps me focused and motivated as well. I told my brother if he wants it he has to work hard so actually I had him on 3 a days. Two times he works out with the school and I make him work out for 1 hour with me on the field as well.

  7. Thanks for the update. Sounds like you’re incredibly busy over there. Hopefully everything continues to go well and good luck with your new sites!

    • Thanks for those great Thursday photos on your site Jake! They are always great. I am looking at getting a SLR camera this weekend. I am non stop right now and with me adding photography soon I don’t know when it will slow down. I need to start taking photos for my travel sites but that will be more of enjoyment. Thanks for the well wishes.

  8. Thomas, I am glad to know your updates. You are doing pretty good at managin your sites and glad to know you are focusing on different niche including travel and SEO. All I can say good going and keep it up, money will follow. Just do what you are doing, We love your site and updates. For guest post it will be my honor to have you on Digitalspikes. Do let me know if you are interested I will invite you.

    • Hey Sam thanks for stopping by and I am glad you like the updates. Its something I like doing from time to time. Blogging, networking, SEO, digital marketing are things I really enjoy doing after family time. Travel and SEO are niches I know as well but never really touched. I will make sure to email you soon about some guest posts ideas and the honor would be all mine.

  9. Wow, you are really making some great progress! I’ll be keeping an eye on your sites, love the update!

    • Thanks Lisa and so are you! And I will be doing the same with your site. How are things going for you as of late? Thanks for stopping by!

  10. Wow, Thomas, I thought I had a lot of my plate but it pales in comparison with all of your stuff! I think that’s really sweet that you make breakfast for your brother and make sure that things are done so your wife can spend more time with the kids. You’re all around awesome!

    • Hey Anna thanks for stopping by and the compliment. I have a great family so they deserve to be treated as such. One of the many reasons I work hard and don’t mind putting in the hours and the extra effort. Looking to get to the point where wifey doesn’t have to work is she doesnt want to. My plate is full but there is always room for dessert so I gotta keep pushing.

    • That part of the post made me smile. He’s such a great brother and husband. Thanks for the updates, Thomas.

      • Thanks for the kind words Marissa, and I will surely keep the updates coming in. I plan to add a few of these each month. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  11. You’re having a pretty nice progress here and your plan seems to be complete and ready to take you to meeting your goal of making more than 1,500 per month. I was too considering bringing back from the dead a completely ignored travel website… it seems that there’s a lot of movement in the blogging world in this area lol.

Regarding my month of August… I am still recovering after the sale of my biggest site, but things are pretty promising and one blog is starting to pick up pace. There’s still a lot of work left to be done to get back to where I was :)

    • C you are doing excellent over there man!! 2 million visits per month I think you have it figured out! I am not sure I would have sold but I understand your reasoning. $1500 a month isn’t as tough as some might think it just depends on how much work, effort, luck and networking you do/get.

How many blogs are you working on currently? Right now I have four that I am actively working on and 3 I need to start so I would be at 7 if I did them all at once so I am kinda letting a few lay low until the new year. Thanks for stopping by and look forward to reading more on your site.

  12. I always love hearing how others run their blogs so I am looking forward to the continued progress of your other ventures. Good luck!

    • Hey Tara glad you like the updates and I will try my best to keep everyone updated on my sites and progress,. How are things going with your site?

  13. Wow! You are busy busy!!! I didn’t know you had that many sites. Well done.

    • Hey Holly a lot of sites but no money yet. Most are still in their infancy stage and YDF is by for the one that gets the most work and effort. However the others would probably be were majority of the income comes from. Looking to make it rain like Holly!!

  14. Good job on growing your site. I have used my site especially to help grow my income by using it as a portfolio for what I can do (ie freelancing, etc)

    • Thanks SuburbanFinance!! How is the freelancing going for you? I thought about freelancing but I requires more of my time which I have very little of left. I think its a great idea to use your site as your portfolio.

  15. Man, you’re busy! The monetization issue can be a tricky one and I think key is to find a balance and not being dependent on one or another, but having several that are creating income for you. I am just starting to put thoughts into what I want to do for my second site. Once my redesign is done later this month I can put more focus on that.

    • John I try to stay busy and focus on the end goal. More time more freedom and especially spending that time and freedom with my family. I am testing different things now and looking for the right balance as you mentioned. How are things going with your business and the site? Cant wait to see the new design and hear about the second site. You will must be super busy as well! Enjoy the weekend!

  16. It sounds like you are super busy with your online projects but more importantly it sounds like you are a wonderful husband that enjoys looking after everyone. They are very fortunate to have you.

    • Sicorra thank you very much for your kind words! I would rather bust my ass now and get to the point I can enjoy my family more than working and making my boss rich. How are things going with you? Are you keeping busy as well? Thanks for stopping by!

  17. Sounds like good progress. I’m still trying to consider different methods of monetization, like you trying to keep a long-term strategy in mind. I’ve also been thinking about a re-design to make the site a little more attractive. I’m starting to put together ideas on things I like and what I would really hope to be getting out of it.

    • Matt honestly your site is kicking butt man! There is no right or wrong way to monetize and sometimes you cant monetize and really make the money you wont. Instead the blog could just be a platform for other ventures. It gets your name out there and known so that other opportunities present themselves. Keep doing what you are doing and you will find what works for you. As always if you need any help just email me.

  18. It sounds like you’ve been super busy, but somehow you’re making it all work. I love these updates because they show that you’re not only a blogger making progress online, but also a great husband and a loving big brother “in real life”. You can’t put a value on those things!

    • Thanks KK! Blogging is just a means to a end goal and I want improvement and success in all aspects in life starting with family. Busy sometimes is an understatement. Sometimes the wifey wonders if I slept at all cause she wakes up and I am already on the laptop working. Gotta get it in when the family sleeps. Thanks for stopping by and hope you have a great weekend!

  19. Wow, it sounds like you’ve got a ton of irons in the fire! How do you manage all the different sites and responsibilities. I have trouble with just one!

    • CashRebel most people have a full-time job and are trying to run a blog. This is my fulltime job and I am a person that likes to have a schedule. My days are broken down and I have a plan in place for each site. Some sites are just one post per week, others 2 and other 5. But I planned this out way before making any moves. It gets easier the 2 and 3 time around.

  20. Wow, it seems like you are keeping busy! Hope you meet all your goals/targets at the end of the month!

    • Thanks Eva on the goal wishes! I do tend to stay fairly busy but always make sure that it doesn’t interfere with the family time. Thanks for stopping by.

  21. Thomas,

It sounds like you have a lot of irons in the fire! Best wishes! It’s good that you’re so focused and have a larger goal in mind.

    Best of luck!
